For today’s installation of the Nashville365 daily painting project I wanted to capture something iconic from Nashville that wasn’t too expected like the Batman Building. So I chose this view of the art deco sign in front of the old Belle Meade Theater. The photo I used as reference was shot from my car while the building was being renovated to house condos and a Harris Teeter grocery. All that’s left of the theatre is the front; the auditorium was gutted for the grocery.

The top is missing here. They took it off while it was being redeveloped. The missing part has “Belle” and some futuristic deco balls at the top.

I’ve always been a fan of Art Deco/Streamline/Moderne in all it’s various forms. It seems so optimistic. And I guess that’s what I like about this painting: the optimism is struggling since the sign has been dismantled and these ominous clouds hang overhead.
